Frequently Asked Questions
Where is my data stored?
By default, all data lives locally in your browser's IndexedDB and never leaves your device. Pro users can optionally enable end-to-end encrypted cloud sync — encryption keys derive on-device from a passphrase only you know, and our servers only ever receive ciphertext.
How do I delete my data?
You can delete individual memories from the side panel. To erase everything locally, uninstall the extension. If you've enabled cloud sync, open Settings → Cloud Sync → Disable & wipe cloud copy to remove the encrypted backup as well. You can also use Export to back up your data before uninstalling.
Which AI platforms are supported?
Rethread works with ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Claude (claude.ai), Gemini (gemini.google.com), Grok (grok.com), Perplexity (perplexity.ai), and DeepSeek (chat.deepseek.com) — six platforms in total.
Why does Rethread need host permissions?
Rethread accesses the six AI platform websites to read conversation content from the page DOM. This is how it extracts context memories. It does not modify page content beyond adding a small Recall button and context preview overlay.
How does end-to-end encrypted cloud sync work?
When you enable Cloud Sync (Pro), a passphrase you choose is run through PBKDF2 and HKDF to derive an AES-256-GCM key — entirely in your browser. Memories, conversations, buckets, tags, snapshots, and templates are encrypted with that key before being uploaded to our Cloudflare R2 backend. The server stores opaque ciphertext + IV; it has no way to decrypt your data, even in principle. There is no "forgot password" recovery by design — write your passphrase down somewhere safe.
Can I manually add or edit memories?
Yes. Click the "+" button in the side panel header to add a new memory manually. You can also click the edit icon on any existing memory card to modify its content, type, or tags.
How do I transfer memories to another browser?
Use the Export button (↓) in the side panel to download all your memories as a JSON file. Then import them in the new browser using the Import button (↑). Memory IDs are deduplicated, so re-importing the same file won't create duplicates.
What are Buckets?
Buckets are color-coded groups that let you organize memories by project, topic, or any category. Create a bucket from the side panel header, and memories can be filtered by bucket. You can create, rename, and delete buckets at any time.
How do I import my chat history?
Click the import button in the side panel to open the Chat History Import wizard. Select your platform (ChatGPT or Claude), upload the export JSON file, and Rethread will parse the conversations and extract memories in bulk. All processing happens locally in your browser.
What is the Insights panel?
The Insights panel gives you a weekly digest of your memory activity — including memory counts by type and platform, top topics, tech stack tracking, key decisions timeline, and ready-to-use prompt recipes generated from your accumulated knowledge.
The Recall button doesn't appear on the page.
Try refreshing the AI platform page. The button injects after the page fully loads (~2 seconds). If it still doesn't appear, check that the extension is enabled in chrome://extensions and the site matches one of the six supported platforms. You can also press Alt+Shift+R as a global hotkey shortcut.
What does the Daily Brief show?
Every morning at 8 AM local time, Rethread builds a structured digest of yesterday's activity — conversations you had, memories captured, key decisions, open questions, follow-ups, and top topics. It surfaces as a banner at the top of the side panel and (optionally) as a system notification.
What are conversation snapshots and diff?
Open any conversation's detail view, click the History icon, and save a labeled snapshot — an immutable copy of the conversation at that point. Later, pick any two snapshots (or a snapshot vs. the live conversation) and Rethread will render a side-by-side word-level diff highlighting added, removed, and modified content.
What is the Prompt Template Marketplace?
Rethread ships with 117 hand-vetted prompt templates across coding, writing, research, and productivity categories. Browse, search, star, and one-click install templates from inside the side panel. Pro users can also publish their own templates to the community library.
Pricing & Pro Plan
What's the difference between Free and Pro?
Free includes up to 100 memories, 3 buckets, 3 recall results, 2-week insights, the Daily Brief, Selective Recall, snapshots & diff, and the ability to install marketplace templates — all stored locally on this device. Pro adds unlimited memories and buckets, 10 recall results, 12-week insights, end-to-end encrypted cloud sync across devices, the ability to publish your own prompt templates to the marketplace, cross-conversation quote search, and Markdown / JSON / PDF export.
How do I upgrade to Pro?
Open the Rethread side panel, go to the Settings tab, and click one of the upgrade options — Monthly ($6.99/mo) or Lifetime ($49 one-time). You'll be taken to a secure checkout page powered by Creem. After payment, you'll receive a license key via email.
How do I activate my license key?
In the Settings tab, enter your license key in the "Activate Pro" field and click Activate. Your Pro status will be verified and saved locally. You can check your license status anytime in Settings.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and more via our payment processor Creem. Creem handles all payment processing and supports local currencies in most countries.
Can I cancel my monthly subscription?
Yes, you can cancel anytime through the Creem Customer Portal (accessible from Settings → "Manage subscription"). After cancellation, your Pro features remain active until the end of the current billing period.
What is the refund policy?
We offer a 14-day money-back guarantee for both monthly and lifetime plans. If you're not satisfied, contact us at
[email protected] within 14 days of purchase for a full refund.
Can I use my license on multiple devices?
Yes — Pro licenses support multi-device activation. Activate the same license key on each browser/device, then enable Cloud Sync with the same passphrase on each one to keep memories, conversations, buckets, and templates in lockstep across all of them.
I forgot my cloud sync passphrase. Can I recover it?
No — by design. The passphrase never leaves your browser, and we never see plaintext keys or data. If you lose it, the encrypted cloud copy becomes permanently unreadable. You can disable sync, wipe the cloud copy, and re-enable with a new passphrase, but any memories that exist only in the cloud (and not on a still-unlocked device) cannot be recovered. Please store your passphrase in a password manager.
